Following in the Footsteps of Elizabeth Haddon

At Haddon Home Care, we draw inspiration from Elizabeth Haddon, the pioneering woman for whom Haddonfield is named. In 1701, at just 20 years old, Elizabeth sailed alone from England to settle land her Quaker father had purchased in West Jersey. Her courage, independence, and commitment to community laid the foundation for what would become Haddonfield, New Jersey.

Elizabeth was known not only as a founder but also as a caregiver. Though not formally trained, she used herbal remedies and traditional healing to care for the sick, often serving as the community’s informal doctor. Her home was a place of comfort and support for those in need. She also built respectful and peaceful relationships with the Lenape people, the original stewards of this land, offering kindness and care at a time when many others did not.

Her legacy of compassion, service, and dignity lives on in our mission to care for others with heart and humanity.

At Haddon Home Care, we honor Elizabeth Haddon’s legacy by weaving her values into everything we do:

  • Independence – Just as Elizabeth boldly charted her own course, we support seniors in maintaining their independence at home through personalized care and respect for their autonomy.
  • Community – Elizabeth helped build a strong, caring community from the ground up. We carry that same spirit by fostering close relationships between caregivers, clients, and families, and by staying deeply engaged with our local neighborhoods.
  • Cultural Respect – Inspired by her relationship with the Lenape, we value inclusivity and cultural understanding. We support clients of all backgrounds, recognizing that everyone deserves compassionate, respectful care.
  • Compassion and Service – Grounded in Quaker values, Elizabeth led with kindness and humility. At Haddon Home Care, we put those same principles at the forefront of our care, making sure each client feels seen, heard, and supported.

Elizabeth Haddon’s life reminds us that one person’s strength and service can shape an entire community—and that’s exactly the kind of legacy we strive to build every day.
